Creating a Homework/Problem Set Assignment

A Homework/Problem Set assignment is for when students complete work on their own paper and upload it to Gradescope. When uploading their assignment either as a PDF or image, they will designate which page their answers to each question are on.

  1. Open the relevant course.
  2. Go to the Assignments page, and select Create Assignment in the bottom right.
  3. Select the Problem / Homework Set option, and select Next.
  4. For the Assignment Settings:
For more information on each setting, check out our Assignment Settings Overview article.
    1. Enter in an Assignment Name.
  5. For Who will upload submissions?, Student will be selected by default.
  6. For Template Visibility, if you want to allow students to view and download the original assignment template, you can select the Allow students to view and download template checkbox.
  7. Upload a blank PDF of the assignment to Gradescope and use it to create an outline that gives submission and grading parameters.

If your assignment is simply a list of textbook problems, you can upload a PDF with questions listed or just a blank PDF.

  8. Have students complete the assignment and upload their completed assignments as a PDF or images to Gradescope.

For more information, check out our article on how students submit this assignment. Also, students can use the Gradesope Mobile App to scan and upload their handwritten assignments.
