Accessing admin settings
Each section on this page corresponds to a setting that can be configured on the Gradescope admin settings page. Use the steps below to navigate to that page.
- Log in to Gradescope.
- Select Settings in the sidebar navigation.
Enabling course access
The Course Access setting requires Gradescope staff to log in with their institution’s single sign-on (SSO) or Learning Management System (LMS) credentials to access their courses in Gradescope. This setting will block a user’s access to their Gradescope course until they sign in with the institution’s SSO or LMS credentials.
This setting only restricts access to Gradescope on the web. Students can still log in through the Gradescope mobile app using their native credentials in order to submit assignments.
- Log in to Gradescope and navigate to the Settings page.
- To require all staff to use the institution’s SSO or LMS credentials to access Gradescope courses, select the checkbox next to the Require LMS or SSO login to access option.
- Select Save.
When enabled, whenever staff log in without using their institution's LMS or SSO login credentials, they will be blocked from accessing their Gradescope courses and will see the following notifications on their course dashboard:
[Institution name] requires LMS login
Log in with your institution's Learning Management System to access Gradescope courses.
Communication with your institution
As this setting will impact how all students and staff access Gradescope, we recommend communicating with them if you decide to utilize this setting. An example message you may want to send could look something like this:
In line with our institution’s commitment to security, all Gradescope users are now required to access their Gradescope courses through [your institution's chosen LMS / SSO].
Screen size considerations
When students and instructors access Gradescope via the LMS, the platform may load inside an iframe. This reduces the available screen space compared to accessing Gradescope directly on the web. Some instructors may find this limiting. If this becomes an issue, many LMSs allow administrators or instructors to configure Gradescope to launch in a new tab:
- Canvas (LTI 1.3): Use our guide on how to use LTI 1.3 with Canvas as an Instructor to configure Gradescope to launch in a new tab.
- Canvas (LTI 1.0): Use our guide on how to use LTI 1.1 with Canvas as an Instructor to configure Gradescope to launch in a new tab.
- Blackboard (Original or Ultra): Use our guide on how to use Blackboard as an Instructor (step 2 under linking your course) to configure Gradescope to launch in a new tab.
- D2L Brightspace: D2L Brightspace launches in a new tab depending on LMS-specific settings.
Users logging into Gradescope via SSO will always launch into a new tab and not experience these potential issues.
Configuring LMS due date sync
This setting automatically syncs the Gradescope assignment due date to the LMS due date when the assignment is created or linked.
This setting applies only to Blackboard and Canvas integrations using LTI 1.3.
- Log in to Gradescope and navigate to the Settings page.
-
To automatically sync Gradescope assignment due dates to the LMS due dates, select Sync Gradescope assignment due dates to the LMS (LTI 1.3 only). The due date of any newly created assignments in Gradescope with autosync to the LMS. The assignment due date can only be edited within the LMS.
When enabled, an instructor won't be able to edit the assignment due date in Gradescope and will see the following message for the Due Date field.
- Select Save Assignment.
Configuring student email visibility
This setting allows administrators to control whether students can see their classmates' email addresses within group submissions. When enabled, students will continue to see group member names, but email addresses will be hidden to support institutional privacy requirements.
- Log in to Gradescope and navigate to the Settings page.
- Under Student Email Visibility, select the checkbox beside Hide students' email addresses from other students in Gradescope to turn this setting on or off.
- Select Save.
