Logging in to Gradescope with your school’s LMS or SSO credentials

In this guide, instructors and students learn how to log in to Gradescope with Single Sign-On (SSO) or through the Learning Management System (LMS).

Before you begin

  • If you're an instructor or staff member, and your LMS is integrated with Gradescope via LTI 1.3, you can always access it through the LMS to make sure assignments are correctly linked.
  • If you don't see Gradescope in your LMS, your instructor or administrator may need to enable it.

In this guide:

Logging in with SSO credentials

If your school has an institutional license and has set up SSO, you can log in to Gradescope using your school’s single sign-on (SSO) system. Follow the steps below based on whether or not you already have a Gradescope account.

If you are struggling to log in using your SSO credentials, this FAQ may be able to help.

Logging in with SSO, and you don’t yet have a Gradescope account

Before you begin, check if your school supports SSO and go to the search for your school in our SSO list.

  1. If your school does appear on the SSO list, you can log in with your school’s SSO credentials.
    1. The email address on your account will be the same as the email address associated with your school’s credentials.
    2. A Gradescope account will be automatically created for you the first time you log in using your school’s credentials.
  2. If your school doesn't appear on the SSO list, this could mean your school hasn’t enabled SSO for Gradescope. We recommend that you reach out to your administrator if you want to use SSO for your institution.

Logging in with SSO, and you already have a Gradescope account that matches your school email address

  1. When you log in to Gradescope with your school’s credentials, Gradescope will automatically link the two accounts.

Logging in with SSO, and you already have a Gradescope account, but it’s a different than your school email address

  1. Log in to Gradescope using your existing email and password.
  1. Go to the account settings page and link your school and Gradescope accounts. If you don’t link your two different accounts, you may end up with two separate Gradescope accounts.

If you already have two separate Gradescope accounts, follow the steps in our FAQ article, How can I merge two accounts?

Logging in via your LMS

  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Open the relevant course.
  3. Look for a Gradescope link.
    1. Left-hand navigation for Canvas or Moodle
    2. Assignments or Tools area for Blackboard or D2L
  4. Select the Gradescope link. You’ll be automatically logged into your Gradescope account via LTI authentication.

Restricted Course Access

To access Gradescope courses, you may be required by your institution to log in with your institution’s Single Sign on (SSO) or Learning Management System (LMS) authenticated credentials.

  • If you log in to Gradescope and notice that you are not able to access your courses and you see any of the following notifications, go out of Gradescope and log back in using your institution’s SSO or LMS credentials.
  • After doing this, you should be able to access your Gradescope courses normally.

Navigating your courses dashboard when you are enrolled at more than one school

For instructors teaching at multiple institutions and students enrolled in more than one institution, the Your Courses dashboard can be navigated using the tabs.

  • Use the All tab to view all your Gradescope courses.
  • Use the institution-specific tab(s) to view courses specific to their institution on your dashboard. This can also help you more quickly see which institution may require SSO or LMS login to access their courses.
  • If one of your schools requires SSO or LMS to log in, those courses will not be accessible until you log in with authenticated credentials. However, courses at other schools can still be accessed when you log in natively.
