Submitting an Exam/Quiz or Homework/Problem Set assignment

In this guide, students will learn how to submit Exam/Quiz and Homework/Problem Set assignments in Gradescope, including the steps for variable-length and fixed-length submissions and how to confirm their work with submission receipts

In this guide:

An Exam/Quiz or Homework/Problem Set assignment can have two types of submissions:

  • Variable-length: For variable-length assignments, your answers can span multiple pages. When you submit, you mark where each response appears in your file.
  • Fixed-length: For fixed-length (templated) assignments, your instructor expects responses in specific locations on each page, such as on a worksheet. You upload your completed assignment as a PDF, and Gradescope automatically aligns your answers with the questions, so you don’t mark their locations.

Submitting a variable-length submission type

To submit a variable-length assignment:

  1. When you open or start the assignment, you’ll have two options for submitting your work via the Gradescope mobile app or website:
    • Individual images, one or more per question.

Gradescope accepts all file types (except .heic) for file upload questions on online assignments.

        1. Retake the photo without portrait mode enabled.

        2. Adjust iPhone camera settings to save images as .jpg files automatically, then re-upload.

        3. Convert the image to .jpg using a third-party app or website before uploading.

    • One PDF that contains the whole submission; Gradescope will ask you to mark where each answer is.

Submitting a fixed-length (templated) submission type

To submit a templated submission:

  1. When you open or start the assignment, you’ll only have one option for submitting your work:
    • One PDF that contains the whole submission.

Submission notifications

Except for Online Assignments, Gradescope emails you a receipt after each submission with the submission time, due date, late due date (if your instructor sets one), and a link to your work.

The email also reminds you that you can resubmit until the due date passes or the timer runs out (if your assignment is timed).
